Applying for Registration

Step 1

From 12 March 2007 DSA introduced criminal record checks for potential driving instructors. You should obtain a criminal record disclosure by ringing Capita Recruitment Vetting Service on 0870 850 2455. You will receive an application pack and guidance on how to complete the form.

Step 2

Once you have your disclosure (clearance to move on to the next stage) you should enter the Disclosure Reference Number on to ADI 3 (Green form).

The only exception to this process is if you have more than three penalty points on your driving licence. If so, you should firstly send ADI 3 to DSA in Nottingham. DSA will consider your application and let you know what to do next.

The DSA booklet 'Your Road to Becoming an Approved Driving Instructor (CAR)' (ADI 14) contains an application form for ADI Registration (ADI 3). The completed form is sent to the DSA. It should be sent promptly but at least 4 weeks prior to the required Part One test date alternatively, you could apply online at www.direct.gov.uk. You will normally get an invitation within 2 weeks of applying. DSA will then request payment for your Part One test.

The Part One Test is held at a number of locations across the country. The locations are shown on the application form.
