Becoming a Driving Instructor | Background
In October 1970, new legislation stated that to give paid instruction in cars, instructors must be on the ADI Register. Instructors are now known as Driving Standards Agency Approved Driving Instructors (Car).
DSA is responsible for the ADI Register and for conducting theory and practical driving tests in Great Britain.
Qualified instructors must display their ADI licence (green badge) in the front left part of their windscreen.
Trainee ADIs can apply for a trainee licence (red badge) provided they have passed the part two driving ability test and completed at least forty hours of instructional training.
The trainee licence allows trainees to be paid for giving driving instruction.
An instructor's responsibilities are to:
- Teach and maintain a high regard for road safety
- Maintain a high level of driving and instructing ability
- Ensure they remain fit and proper persons to stay on the ADI Register
- Adopt a responsible and professional approach to their clients
All driving instructors are strongly encouraged to sign up and adhere to DSA's voluntary code of conduct.
