Legal Requirements
When applying to become a driving instructor you must meet the following requirements:
- Have held a full UK or EU unrestricted car licence for at least four out of the last six years prior to entering the ADI Register, after qualifying
- Not have been disqualified from driving in the four years prior to joining the ADI Register
- Be a fit and proper person; any spent or unspent convictions (motoring or otherwise) will be taken into account. This includes fixed penalty offences. The Registrar judges each case individually and would look closely if endorsements totalled five penalty points or more
- Pass the part two (driving ability) and part three (instructional ability) tests within two years of passing part one (theory)
- Apply for registration not later than one year after passing part three
If you meet these requirements you are clear to apply for criminal record disclosure and registration.
