Qualifying Process – Part Two

This test comprises an eyesight check, simple questions on the safety aspects of a vehicle followed by an advanced-standard drive of one hour's duration.

During the drive, the examiner would expect to see:

  • Use of correct road procedure
  • Good judgement of speed, distance and timing
  • Anticipation of other road users, taking the necessary action
  • Excellent, smooth handling of all the vehicle's controls
  • All-round observation, scanning, awareness and planning

The route will include rural and urban driving through a variety of junctions and road conditions. Expect to drive on dual carriageways and, where possible, on a motorway.

You will be expected to perform manoeuvre exercises, including:

  • Reversing into a limited opening (side road) on the left and right
  • Reverse park the vehicle into the space behind a parked car (on the street), or…
  • Reverse park into a parking bay (at some test centres only)
  • Turn the vehicle around in the road using forward and reverse gears
  • Stop the vehicle in an emergency

To pass the test you must demonstrate a high level of driving ability, making progress up to speed limits when appropriate.
