Qualifying Process – Part Three

The objective of the part three test is to assess your ability to give quality, well-timed instruction at the kerb and on-the-move.

The test lasts for one hour and is in two parts, known as phases:

  • Phase one tests your ability to teach a complete novice (played by an examiner), or a partly-trained student, one of ten subjects drawn from the driving syllabus. This phase lasts for about thirty minutes.
  • In the second phase the examiner role-plays a trained-standard pupil or a student with a full driving licence requiring development training. The subject chosen in the second phase will be different from the first.

You should treat the examiner as you would one of your own pupils. You are allowed to use training aids to help you to deliver the lesson and your pupil to understand it.

To be successful, you will need to demonstrate your ability to:

  • Identify, analyse and correct your pupil's faults
  • Match the level of your instruction to the ability of your pupil
  • Retain control of the lesson. You must be in tune with your pupil's needs and those of other road users

The vehicle you use for the test must be roadworthy, taxed, with a valid MOT (if necessary) and have a manual gearbox. You must display two L plates for the test.

You should read DSA's advice on vehicle insurance for the test. Insurance must cover liabilities the examiner may have when driving the vehicle.
